It’s been a year since Miraculum compiled and distributed the first edition of Blueprint – a newsletter designed to keep you informed of developments at Miraculum and about trends and issues in the e-procurement arena.
It’s also been a year in which e-procurement descended from the heights of the information technology (IT) development cycle, which was categorised during 2000 by market hype driving a buyer frenzy for everything “e”.
There’s been growing recognition that simply buying e-procurement software is not enough and a groundswell of questioning the total costs involved has been developing. As a result, licence fees for e-procurement software are collapsing. But while the hype surrounding e-procurement may be dead, e-procurement itself certainly isn’t. There’s been a dawning sense of realism that there’s more to e-procurement than simply using the Internet and other related technologies to transform purchasing into a more efficient process. This is because the following 10 issues, which first drove the move to e-procurement, are still present:
And e-procurement – real e-procurement – is about enabling the centralisation of high value-adding activities like strategic sourcing, while permitting the decentralisation of activities such as requisitioning or purchase order approvals, within an environment that affords the necessary controls.
So what does all this mean? What lies ahead for the e-procurement industry?
2002 will be the year in which real leaders in the industry emerge: leaders who have adapted to the changing requirements of e-procurement users and focus on the provision of outsourced sourcing and strategic sourcing services; leaders who can provide access to vertical, private or public e-marketplaces; leaders who can provide contract management and ensure supplier SLA (service level agreement) compliance; and leaders who can offer trading partner management.
In effect, leaders like Miraculum.
I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you and yours everything of the best for a safe and rejuvenating festive season and all you wish yourself for a happy, healthy, prosperous 2002.
